Instructions For Authors
The Journal of Biomaterials (JBI) publishes rigorous, reproducible research that connects material innovation with biological performance and clinical relevance.
Use these instructions to prepare a complete manuscript, reduce revision cycles, and accelerate publication readiness.
Before You Submit
JBI accepts original work that has not been published or submitted elsewhere. Manuscripts should align with the journal scope and provide clear evidence that the biomaterial advances performance, safety, or clinical usability. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of all data, references, and disclosures.
If your manuscript includes human or animal data, include formal ethics approvals and consent statements. Clearly disclose funding sources and any conflicts of interest. We encourage data availability statements and deposition in trusted repositories when applicable. Preprints are permitted provided they are disclosed at submission.
If you are uncertain about scope or suitability, contact the editorial office before submission for guidance.
Manuscript Structure
Structure your manuscript to make the study easy to evaluate and reproduce. Use clear headings and ensure the narrative follows a logical progression from rationale to conclusions.
Front Matter
Title (concise and descriptive), author names and affiliations, corresponding author details, and 4 to 6 keywords. Provide a structured abstract that summarizes objectives, methods, key results, and conclusions. A short running title is recommended for page headers.
Core Sections
Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. Clearly describe material synthesis, characterization methods, and statistical analysis. Ensure the discussion interprets findings within the context of published literature and acknowledges limitations.
Cover Letter
Include a cover letter (up to 500 words) that explains novelty, clinical relevance, and why the manuscript fits JBI. Mention any related submissions, prior preprints, or overlapping datasets. The cover letter should be included in the submission workflow, not as a separate file.
Article Types And Length
JBI considers original research articles, reviews, short communications, methods papers, and perspectives. Manuscript length should be appropriate to the contribution. We value concise, well organized writing that highlights key results without unnecessary repetition.
If the work includes extensive datasets or detailed protocols, place supporting material in supplementary files and reference them clearly in the main text. For clinical or translational studies, include enough detail to evaluate safety, performance, and relevance to patient outcomes.
Figures, Tables, And Supplementary Files
Figures and tables must be clear, readable, and referenced in the text. Provide descriptive captions that explain what the reader should learn from each figure or table. Use consistent units and avoid duplicating data across figures and tables. Supply high resolution files at acceptance if requested by the editorial office.
Supplementary material is welcome when it adds essential clarity or supports reproducibility. Supplemental files should not be required to understand the main conclusions. If video, code, or large datasets are included, provide stable links and metadata for long term access.
Formatting And Style
Use clear, professional scientific language. Define abbreviations at first use and keep terminology consistent throughout the manuscript. Report measurements in SI units and provide conversion values if non standard units are required for clinical relevance.
Equations should be editable and numbered if referenced in the text. Use standard nomenclature for polymers, ceramics, and alloys, and include trade names only when necessary to clarify material sourcing. Avoid promotional language and ensure that all claims are supported by data.
Statistical Reporting And Reproducibility
Provide a dedicated subsection that explains statistical methods, sample sizes, and the number of independent replicates. Report exact p values where applicable and specify the statistical software used. If data were excluded, explain the criteria and the impact on results.
Reproducibility is a core expectation. Include detailed information on fabrication conditions, surface treatments, and characterization workflows so that other researchers can replicate the work. For computational or machine learning studies, provide model parameters and validation procedures.
Data Quality Checklist
Report mean values with appropriate measures of variability, indicate the number of samples per test, and describe any normalization procedures. Clear statistical reporting strengthens reviewer confidence and accelerates decision making.
Clinical And Preclinical Studies
For in vivo or clinical research, describe study design, inclusion criteria, endpoints, and adverse events. Provide protocol details that explain surgical handling, implantation methods, and follow up intervals. Clinical trials should include registration identifiers when available.
Animal studies must include species, strain, sex, housing conditions, and anesthesia or analgesia protocols. Report ethical approvals and welfare considerations. For ex vivo models, describe tissue sourcing and handling procedures.
Human Studies
Include informed consent procedures, privacy safeguards, and institutional review board approvals in the manuscript.
Animal Studies
Provide compliance statements with relevant animal care guidelines and justification for sample size.
Data, Materials, And Reporting Standards
Reproducibility is central to biomaterials research. Provide detailed material composition, processing parameters, and testing protocols. Report assay conditions, calibration, and validation steps. If custom devices, software, or analysis pipelines were used, describe them clearly and include version numbers where possible.
Data Availability
Include a data availability statement in the manuscript. Deposit datasets in a trusted repository or institutional archive when feasible, and cite accession numbers or DOIs in the text.
Materials Transparency
List vendors, lot numbers, and key specifications for critical materials. For proprietary materials, describe composition or performance metrics needed for evaluation.
References And Citations
Use a consistent reference style and ensure all citations are accurate. Cite primary sources for methods and key findings. Include DOIs when available. References should be numbered in the order they appear in the text. If you cite preprints or datasets, ensure they are clearly labeled and accessible.
Avoid excessive self citation or citation padding. Strong reference practices improve discoverability and support the integrity of the scholarly record.
Ethics And Publication Standards
JBI follows recognized best practices for publication ethics. Manuscripts may be screened for originality and data integrity. Any suspected misconduct will be investigated in accordance with editorial policies.
Authorship
All listed authors must meet authorship criteria and approve the final manuscript prior to submission.
Conflict Disclosure
Disclose financial, advisory, or intellectual property relationships that could influence the research.
Ethics Approval
Provide IRB or animal care approvals and consent statements for studies involving humans or animals.
Plagiarism Control
All submissions must be original and properly cited. Text overlap or data duplication is not permitted.
