What publication costs, when it falls due, what it covers, and the one thing it has no bearing on — whether the manuscript is accepted.

The charge
The article processing charge for Journal of Tropical Diseases and Medicine is USD 1,200 per accepted article. There is no submission fee, no charge during peer review, and no page, figure or color charge.
The charge is the same for every article type and does not vary with the length of the manuscript, the number of figures, or the country the authors work in.
Where local law requires a sales tax or VAT to be added, it is shown on the invoice and is not included in the figure above. Any bank or transfer fee charged by the paying institution's own bank is not something the journal sets or receives.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
When it falls due
Submission
Nothing is charged. A manuscript is screened and reviewed without any payment being requested or any payment status being known to the editor.
Peer review
Nothing is charged, at any stage, including revision.
Acceptance
The decision is taken first. The charge falls due only once the manuscript has been accepted.
Invoice
An invoice is issued to the corresponding author or to the institution they nominate, with the details needed for institutional procurement. A pro forma invoice is available on request.
Publication
The article is published open access under CC BY 4.0 with the authors retaining copyright.
What the charge covers
- Editorial handling: screening, reviewer selection, correspondence and the decision process.
- Management of peer review, including the reviewers' time being organized and recorded.
- Screening for text overlap, and integrity checks on data and images where they are needed.
- Copy-editing, typesetting, proofing and preparation of the published files.
- Metadata preparation and registration, so the article can be found and cited.
- Permanent hosting, and deposit into digital preservation as described on Indexing and discovery.
- Open access from the day of publication, with no charge to any reader anywhere.
Charges and editorial decisions
Editorial decisions are independent of an author's ability to pay. The charge falls due only after acceptance, and has no bearing on whether a manuscript is accepted, how quickly it is reviewed, who reviews it, or how it is presented once published.
Nothing that can be bought changes an editorial outcome. That includes membership, language editing, and any other service the publisher offers: each is a service purchased separately and none of them reaches the handling editor.
Authors for whom the charge is an obstacle are invited to write to the editorial office at [email protected] before submitting. Any arrangement is settled separately from the assessment of the manuscript and is not visible to the editor taking the decision.
Withdrawing a manuscript
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
- Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
- Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.
- Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
A manuscript that is declined is not charged. The withdrawal terms apply only where the authors choose to withdraw a manuscript that is still under consideration.
Invoices, funders and institutions
- Who is invoiced
The corresponding author, or the institution or grant they nominate. Nominate the payer at acceptance so the invoice carries the right details first time.
- Funder compliance
Publication under CC BY 4.0 with the author retaining copyright meets the open-access conditions of most research funders, and the charge is usually an eligible cost on a grant. Where a funder requires deposit in PubMed Central, see the NIHMS route on Indexing and discovery.
- Institutional procurement
Where a purchase order, a pro forma invoice or supplier registration is needed, the billing office provides them.
- Membership
Where a membership arrangement affects what an author pays, the terms are those confirmed by the membership office. See Membership.
