Overview

The sympathetic nervous system is one of the two main divisions of the autonomic nervous system, the part of the nervous system that controls involuntary body functions. It governs the body's rapid responses to stress and exertion, often summarized as the "fight or flight" response, by increasing heart rate, raising blood pressure, dilating airways, and redirecting blood flow. Working in balance with the parasympathetic system, it helps maintain homeostasis and adjusts physiological activity to changing demands. Research published by OpenAccessPub journals examines autonomic and sympathetic function through several physiological measures. Studies of heart rate variability, including investigations of meditation and stress on heart rate variability, use this marker to assess the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. Work on baroreflex sensitivity in an experimental model of renovascular hypertension addresses the reflex control of blood pressure in which the sympathetic system participates, while a study of Valsalva hemodynamics and tissue oxygenation in young adults with type 1 diabetes probes autonomic cardiovascular regulation. Additional research on vagus nerve stimulation explores modulation of autonomic pathways. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access papers gather evidence relevant to the sympathetic nervous system and the regulation of cardiovascular and physiological function.
