Overview

The central nervous system (CNS) is the part of the nervous system that consists of the brain and spinal cord and serves as the body's main centre for processing information and coordinating activity. It receives sensory input, integrates and interprets it, and directs motor and physiological responses, working together with the peripheral nervous system to regulate movement, sensation, cognition, and the function of internal organs. As the control hub of the body, the CNS is fundamental to virtually all physiological and behavioural processes. Because the CNS underlies so many functions, it is studied across neurology, oncology, immunology, and physiology, and it can be affected by a wide range of diseases and processes. The research indexed here reflects this diversity, including studies of malignant neoplasms of the central nervous system, lymphoma infiltration of the CNS during chemotherapy, and inflammatory and demyelinating conditions such as central nervous system involvement in Behcet's disease, multiple sclerosis, and post-COVID-19 acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Other articles examine the biochemical basis of controlled breathing, the conservation of developmental genes in vertebrate brain development, neurological aspects of metabolic disorders such as Tay-Sachs disease, and the neurological effects of COVID-19. Together they illustrate the central role of the CNS in health and its involvement in many neurological and systemic conditions.
