Tier 2: Secondary Focus

Infant Developmental Outcomes

Mechanisms by which milk components influence infant growth, immune system maturation, gut microbiome establishment, and neurodevelopment. Observational outcomes and implementation evaluations are welcome when methodologically rigorous and directly relevant to breastfeeding practice, equity, or policy impact.

Comparative Lactation Biology

Cross-species studies examining evolutionary adaptations in lactation, milk composition variation across mammals, and translational models for human lactation research.

Lactation Pathophysiology

Biological mechanisms underlying lactation disorders including mastitis pathogenesis, insufficient milk production at the cellular level, and mammary gland inflammation. Clinical management studies also welcome.

Methodological Innovations

Novel analytical techniques for milk analysis, lactation assessment tools with biological or clinical validation, omics approaches (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics), and imaging technologies for mammary tissue.

Emerging Areas (Selective Consideration)

Epigenetic regulation of lactation genes
Extracellular vesicles in human milk
Milk-derived stem cells and regenerative potential
Artificial intelligence for milk composition prediction
Synthetic biology approaches to milk production
Single-cell analysis of mammary epithelium
Note: Manuscripts in emerging areas undergo additional editorial review to ensure alignment with journal scope and sufficient methodological rigor.
