Overview
Lipid peroxidation products are the chemical compounds generated when reactive oxygen species attack the unsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes and lipoproteins, degrading them through a chain reaction known as lipid peroxidation. This process yields a range of breakdown molecules, including lipid hydroperoxides and reactive aldehydes such as malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxynonenal, many of which are biologically active and capable of damaging proteins, DNA, and membranes. Because their concentrations rise under oxidative stress, these products are widely used as biomarkers of oxidative damage in research and clinical studies, and their accumulation has been linked to aging, atherosclerosis, neurodegeneration, and other disease processes. Within the antioxidant-research scope of this journal, peer-reviewed work has examined oxidative stress and the protective role of dietary and endogenous antioxidants, including studies of antioxidant micronutrients in metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis risk factors, oxidative telomere attrition and biological aging, lipopolysaccharide-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in tissue, and advanced oxidation end products in hemodialysis patients. Together these articles illustrate how oxidative damage to lipids and other biomolecules is measured and counteracted. This page gathers open-access research relevant to the formation, measurement, and biological consequences of lipid peroxidation products.
