Overview
Flavonoids are a large class of polyphenolic compounds produced by plants, found widely in fruits, vegetables, herbs, and beverages, where they contribute to pigmentation and flavour. They are valued for their antioxidant properties, scavenging free radicals and supporting redox balance, and many also exhibit anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and other biological activities. The topic is important in nutrition, phytochemistry, and pharmacology because dietary and plant-derived flavonoids may help counter oxidative damage and are studied for potential roles in health and disease prevention. Research published under this topic frequently quantifies total phenolic and flavonoid content alongside Antioxidant Activity in plant extracts, as in studies of Argemone mexicana, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Asparagus racemosus, and Surinamese medicinal plants with adaptogenic properties. Other articles report the isolation of new antioxidant flavonoids, such as those from Secamone afzelii, and examine how solvent pH influences phytochemical and antioxidant potential. Functional and protective effects are explored through flavonoids from Abelmoschus esculentus seeds shielding the heart against oxidative injury, antioxidant pod-coat extracts of pigeon pea used to stabilise soybean oil, and biological activities against cadmium-induced osteoporosis. Further work addresses the total antioxidant capacity of foods such as orange juices and the Antioxidant Activity of curry leaf and other species, collectively reflecting the analysis, sources, and bioactivity of plant flavonoids and related phytochemicals.
