Overview

Antioxidants in health and disease is the study of how compounds that neutralise free radicals and reactive oxygen species influence physiological function and the development of illness. By counteracting oxidative stress, the imbalance between reactive species and the body's defences, antioxidants help protect lipids, proteins, and DNA from damage that contributes to a wide range of chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and certain cancers, as well as to ageing. This field encompasses both endogenous defences and antioxidants obtained from the diet, such as vitamins, minerals, phenolics, and flavonoids found in fruits, vegetables, medicinal plants, and oils. Research characterises the antioxidant capacity of natural sources, often correlating activity with total phenolic content and using standardised methods to measure total antioxidant status, and evaluates how supplementation may support the management of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. Studies in cell and animal models probe protective effects against oxidative injury, while applied work examines antioxidants as stabilisers that extend the shelf life of foods and oils. Investigations also extend to age-related conditions such as macular degeneration. Across these strands, the central question is how the balance between oxidants and antioxidants shapes health, and under what conditions dietary or therapeutic antioxidants confer measurable benefit rather than harm.
