Overview
Endangered species are populations of organisms at serious risk of extinction within the foreseeable future as a result of threats such as habitat loss and fragmentation, overexploitation, pollution, invasive species, disease, and climate change. Risk is heightened by intrinsic biological traits, including small population size, restricted geographic range, low reproductive rate, and specialized ecological requirements. The conservation of such species aims to halt and reverse population declines and to preserve the ecological roles they perform, since each contributes to the structure and functioning of its ecosystem and to overall biodiversity. Research relevant to this area documents the status, distribution, and threats facing vulnerable wildlife, including birds and mammals of arid and coastal regions, the migration status and anthropogenic threats to ungulates such as the white-eared kob, and the distribution and conservation challenges of large mammals in managed forests. Related work examines endemic amphibians in their natural environments, the adverse effects of disturbances such as underwater sound on aquatic fauna, and the role of ecotourism and protected areas in conservation. Across these strands the topic emphasizes assessing extinction risk, identifying drivers of decline, and designing interventions to protect threatened populations and their habitats. The field integrates conservation biology, ecology, and wildlife management to safeguard endangered species and to maintain the biodiversity and ecological functions they support.
