ment of Plankton Diversity Plankton are tiny organisms suspended in ocean waters that form the base of the marine food chain. They are essential to the health of our oceans as they provide food, oxygen, and stability to their local ecosystems. Assessment of plankton diversity is an important method for monitoring water health. The diversity of plankton species in an area can be used as an indicator of the overall health of the marine ecosystem. Researchers use plankton surveys to determine which species live in a given area, and to assess the population size and health of those species.
