Overview

The antioxidant system is the integrated network of enzymatic and non-enzymatic defences that neutralises reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and limits oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Its enzymatic arm includes superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, while low-molecular-weight scavengers such as glutathione, ascorbate, tocopherols, carotenoids, and dietary polyphenols provide complementary protection. When the generation of free radicals exceeds this buffering capacity, the resulting oxidative stress contributes to cellular dysfunction and to the pathogenesis of metabolic, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and reproductive disorders, making measurement of total antioxidant status and redox biomarkers an important experimental and clinical readout. Peer-reviewed work relevant to this topic examines enhancement of the antioxidant system to alleviate heavy-metal toxicity in plant seedlings, the antioxidant and membrane-protective properties of novel compounds, antioxidant micronutrients in metabolic syndrome, protective effects of chlorogenic acid and quercetin against chemically induced neuro-, hepato-, and nephrotoxicity, and oxidative stress and apoptosis in testicular tissue. These studies draw on enzymology, cell and animal models, and phytochemistry to characterise how antioxidant defences modulate tissue injury and disease, an area in which the journal publishes peer-reviewed research spanning organismal and biochemical biology.
