Overview

Domestic animals are species that have been bred and kept by humans over many generations for purposes such as food, labour, materials, research, and companionship. Through the long process of domestication, these animals, which include cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, poultry, dogs, and cats, have undergone genetic and behavioural changes that distinguish them from their wild ancestors and adapt them to life alongside people. Domestic animals hold considerable economic, agricultural, and social importance, supplying meat, milk, eggs, fibre, and draught power, while also serving as companions and working partners. Their management raises ongoing considerations in animal health, welfare, breeding, and the prevention of diseases that can pass between animals and humans. As a journal focused on Zoological Research, this page situates domestic animals within the broader study of animal biology, behaviour, and health. Related peer-reviewed work indexed here includes an investigation of emerging risk factors and the isolation of potentially pathogenic bacteria from domestic dog stool in the Port Harcourt metropolis, which reflects interest in the health and microbiology of domesticated species. The page assembles encyclopedic reference information on domestic animals, including their domestication, roles, and management, consistent with the journal's zoological scope.
