Overview

Animal production is the area of zoological and agricultural science concerned with raising livestock and other animals for food, fiber, and related products, and with the husbandry practices that sustain them. It encompasses the management of species such as ruminants, poultry, fish, and small stock, addressing nutrition and feeding, breeding and reproduction, growth, health, and the efficiency with which animals convert feed into meat, milk, eggs, and other outputs. A central theme is animal nutrition: research evaluates forages, supplements, and feed ingredients, measuring intake, digestibility, growth, and feed-utilization efficiency to improve productivity in species ranging from guinea pigs and Nile tilapia to cattle and sheep. Reproductive management, including techniques such as oocyte maturation and structured breeding programs, supports genetic improvement and herd development. Animal health is integral, since parasitic and zoonotic diseases reduce productivity and affect food safety, making disease prevalence, diagnosis, and control important concerns. Sustainability considerations, including alternative protein sources and efficient resource use, increasingly shape the field. Animal production contributes substantially to food security, nutrition, and rural livelihoods worldwide. As a discipline it integrates nutrition, genetics, reproduction, and veterinary health to enhance the productivity, welfare, and sustainability of animal agriculture across diverse species and farming systems.
