Overview
Sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality, encompassing safe and consensual relationships, freedom from coercion and disease, and access to information and care. Within Women's Reproductive Health it integrates contraception and family planning, prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, management of sexual dysfunction, and the rights-based dimensions of autonomy, equity, and dignity. It is shaped by biological factors alongside social determinants such as education, gender norms, stigma, and health-system access. The research gathered here reflects these dimensions through studies of barriers to sexual and reproductive healthcare for lesbian, bisexual, and sex-worker populations, the care needs of survivors of sexual violence, pharmacological management of hypoglycaemic sexual desire disorder, and extensive work on parent-adolescent communication and adolescent knowledge of sexual and reproductive health across multiple countries. Further studies examine HIV and pre-exposure prophylaxis, preventive lifestyle behaviours, sexually transmitted infection prevalence, and preconception care. Together they address knowledge, communication, prevention, service access, and vulnerable populations across diverse settings. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the determinants, behaviours, services, and outcomes that constitute sexual health within the broader field of reproductive medicine.
