Overview

Prenatal diagnosis is the process of detecting diseases, structural abnormalities, or genetic conditions in a fetus before birth. It combines screening tests, which estimate the likelihood of a condition, with diagnostic tests that confirm or exclude it. Common methods include ultrasound imaging to assess fetal anatomy and growth, maternal blood tests and cell-free DNA analysis, and invasive procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, which obtain fetal cells for chromosomal and genetic study. Prenatal diagnosis allows parents and clinicians to anticipate and plan for conditions that may require treatment before, during, or after birth, to consider available interventions, and to make informed decisions about pregnancy management. As a component of Women's Reproductive Health, it links obstetric care with genetics, imaging, and fetal medicine. The journal's research relevant to this topic includes the use of three-dimensional ultrasound and Doppler angiography in the prenatal diagnosis of left isomerism, an assessment of prenatal prognostication in congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and a report of fetal abdominal cystic lesions presenting as a diagnostic and prognostic challenge. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to prenatal diagnosis and maternal-fetal health.
