Overview

The placenta is a temporary organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy and serves as the principal interface between the mother and the developing fetus. Forming in the early weeks of gestation and attaching to the uterine wall, it transports oxygen and nutrients from the maternal bloodstream to the fetus, removes waste products, and produces hormones that sustain pregnancy. Proper placental development and positioning are essential for healthy fetal growth and maternal well-being, and abnormalities can lead to serious complications. These include placenta previa, in which the placenta covers the cervix, and abnormally invasive placentation such as placenta accreta and percreta, both associated with bleeding and obstetric risk, as well as anatomical variants that may influence neonatal outcomes. Within this women's reproductive-health collection, the journal publishes research on multiple aspects of the placenta and surrounding pregnancy biology, including placenta previa in the context of prior caesarean delivery, placenta percreta in a unicornuate uterus, anatomical variants of the placenta and their relation to neonatal outcome, umbilical cord structure and neonatal outcome, hormonal signaling involved in decidualization and uterine receptivity, and retained placenta in animal reproductive studies, reflecting clinical, anatomical, and physiological perspectives on placental function.
