Overview

Infections during pregnancy are maternal infections that pose risk to the pregnant woman and the developing fetus, and they constitute an important focus of antenatal care because of their potential to cause miscarriage, preterm birth, congenital infection, and adverse maternal outcomes. They include urinary tract and genital infections, sexually transmitted infections, and systemic and parasitic infections, several of which can be transmitted vertically to the fetus or neonate. Prevention rests on screening, timely treatment, immunization where applicable, and antenatal surveillance, with management balancing maternal benefit against fetal safety. Research relevant to this area examines the epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections, including congenital syphilis and population-level analyses of infection prevalence, alongside the utilization of antenatal care services and the determinants of care-seeking among pregnant women. Related work addresses hematologic conditions complicating pregnancy, preventive practice during epidemics such as COVID-19, and the care of survivors of sexual assault. Maternal mental health and broader reproductive-health context further shape outcomes. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical and epidemiologic studies addressing infections in pregnancy, antenatal care utilization, sexually transmitted and congenital infection, and the prevention and management of conditions threatening maternal and fetal health.
