Overview

Endometrial cancer is a malignancy that arises in the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus, and is the most common form of uterine cancer. It most often occurs in postmenopausal women, although it can develop earlier, and its most frequent presenting symptom is abnormal uterine bleeding. The disease is strongly associated with prolonged exposure to estrogen unopposed by progesterone, so that risk factors include obesity, early menarche, late menopause, never having been pregnant, and certain hormone therapies, while protective factors include combined hormonal contraception. Most cases are detected at an early, curable stage, and treatment commonly involves surgical removal of the uterus, sometimes combined with radiation, hormonal therapy, or chemotherapy depending on tumor grade and stage. As a journal devoted to Women's Reproductive Health, Women's Reproductive Health covers gynecologic conditions and cancers affecting the uterus and reproductive tract, including hormonal influences on endometrial and uterine tissue. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to endometrial cancer, its risk factors and hormonal drivers, and its diagnosis and management.
