Overview
Diabetes during pregnancy refers to elevated blood glucose levels occurring in a pregnant woman, encompassing both gestational diabetes, which develops during pregnancy in women without previously known diabetes, and pre-existing type 1 or type 2 diabetes that continues through pregnancy. Gestational diabetes arises when hormonal changes of pregnancy increase the body's resistance to insulin and the pancreas cannot compensate, leading to high blood sugar. If not well managed, diabetes in pregnancy can raise the risk of complications for both mother and baby, including excessive fetal growth, delivery difficulties, and metabolic problems in the newborn, and women who experience gestational diabetes have a higher likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Management typically involves monitoring blood glucose, dietary and lifestyle measures, and, when needed, medication, along with careful obstetric care. Within the broader field of Women's Reproductive Health, diabetes during pregnancy is an important aspect of maternal and fetal well-being, intersecting with prenatal care, nutrition, and the long-term health of mothers. This page presents encyclopedic background on diabetes during pregnancy, its causes and risks, and its place within the care of women's reproductive and maternal health.
