Overview

Breastfeeding is the feeding of an infant with milk directly from the mother's breast and is the recommended mode of early infant nutrition, with exclusive breastfeeding advised through the first months of life. Human milk provides a complete and dynamically changing supply of macronutrients, immunoglobulins, oligosaccharides, hormones, and bioactive cells that support growth, immune protection against infection, and gastrointestinal and neurodevelopmental maturation, while also conferring maternal benefits and reinforcing maternal-infant bonding. Successful breastfeeding depends on lactation physiology, effective latch and milk transfer, maternal nutrition and health, and the social, cultural, religious, and economic factors that shape initiation and duration. As a modifiable determinant of child survival and health, breastfeeding is closely linked to outcomes such as diarrheal disease, micronutrient status, and growth. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on these themes, including breastfeeding and melatonin in perinatal health, the influence of religion on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of lactating mothers, exclusive breastfeeding beliefs among low-income women, programs to promote perceived adequate milk, and associations between infant feeding and diarrheal disease, vitamin status, and stunting among young children. This body of work reflects the nutritional, immunological, behavioral, and public-health dimensions of breastfeeding and its central role in maternal and child health across diverse populations.
