Overview
Mental health disorders in women are psychological and psychiatric conditions, such as depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, that affect women, sometimes at different rates or with different presentations than in men. Biological factors including hormonal changes across the reproductive lifespan, together with social factors such as gender-based discrimination, caregiving burden, violence, and unequal access to resources, can contribute to the onset and persistence of these conditions. Recognizing sex- and gender-specific patterns is important for accurate diagnosis and effective, equitable care. Research in Women's Mental Health published in the journal addresses several of these concerns, including the prevalence of psychological distress across urban and rural populations, gender disparities and the impact of late diagnosis of ADHD in females, postpartum mood and anxiety disorders and the experiences of parents and clinicians, and the rights of women living with mental illness. Together these contributions illustrate how clinical, social, and rights-based perspectives inform the study of Women's Mental Health. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to mental health disorders in women, offering an evidence-based resource for readers interested in the conditions, risk factors, and care experiences that shape women's psychological well-being.
