Overview
Mental health is a state of psychological, emotional, and social well-being that enables individuals to cope with stress, function productively, form relationships, and contribute to their communities. It is shaped by an interplay of biological, psychological, and social determinants, and exists on a continuum that includes both positive well-being and diagnosable disorders. Research in this area addresses the epidemiology and lived experience of mental illness, the social and cultural factors that influence it, disparities affecting marginalized and vulnerable groups, and the systems and providers that deliver care. Particular attention is given to Women's Mental Health, including perinatal and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, as well as to stigma, the well-being of service providers, the influence of religion and identity, and the mental health consequences of chronic illness and crises such as displacement and pandemic. The peer-reviewed studies indexed under this topic examine gender disparities in attention-deficit diagnosis, the rights of women with mental illness, stigma and compassion among mental-health providers, religion and mental health, disparities affecting LGBTQ+ and migrant populations, postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, and mental health in cancer survivors and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Together they reflect research spanning the determinants, disparities, and care of mental health across diverse populations and clinical contexts.
