Overview

Eating disorders are a group of psychiatric conditions defined by persistent disturbances in eating behavior and by distorted attitudes toward food, weight, and body image that harm physical and psychological health. The principal recognized disorders are anorexia nervosa, characterized by restriction and intense fear of weight gain; bulimia nervosa, marked by cycles of binge eating and compensatory behaviors; and binge eating disorder, involving recurrent episodes of uncontrolled overeating. Related and emerging patterns include night eating syndrome and orthorexia nervosa, an excessive preoccupation with healthy eating. These disorders are multifactorial, arising from interacting genetic, psychological, sociocultural, and environmental influences, and they frequently coexist with depression, anxiety, and dysfunctional attitudes; sociocultural pressures, including idealized body imagery amplified by social media, are recognized contributing factors. Eating disorders carry substantial medical risk, with consequences ranging from nutritional deficiency and metabolic and organ damage to disturbed sleep and impaired quality of life, and they can occasionally mimic or be mistaken for organic disease. Assessment considers eating behavior, psychopathology, and physical status, and treatment is typically multidisciplinary, integrating psychological therapy, nutritional rehabilitation, and management of medical and psychiatric comorbidity. Research in this area examines causes, comorbid symptoms, the impact of cultural and digital influences, and approaches to prevention and care across the lifespan.
