Overview

Behavior therapy is a family of psychological treatments that apply principles of learning theory to modify maladaptive behaviour and the cognitions that sustain it. Grounded in classical and operant conditioning, it assumes that problematic responses are largely learned and can therefore be unlearned or replaced through structured, goal-directed techniques. Core methods include exposure, systematic desensitization, contingency management, behavioural activation, skills training, and relaxation, often combined with cognitive strategies in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to address distorted appraisals alongside overt behaviour. The approach is empirically driven, emphasizing measurable targets, functional analysis of antecedents and consequences, and ongoing assessment of progress. It is applied across the lifespan and to a broad range of conditions, including anxiety and specific fears, depression, mood and bipolar disorders, tic and Tourette's spectrum presentations, and behavioural disturbances associated with dementia, where behaviour management techniques can reduce distress and reliance on pharmacotherapy. In children, school-based and family-involved interventions address anxiety and related difficulties. Behaviour therapy also informs suicide prevention and psychosocial intervention frameworks that integrate contextual and conceptual formulations. Delivered individually or in groups, and increasingly within stepped-care and multidisciplinary models, it remains a foundational, evidence-based component of contemporary mental health treatment.
