Overview
The circulatory system is the organ system that transports blood, and with it oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and metabolic wastes, throughout the body, maintaining the internal environment that cells require to function. In vertebrates it comprises the heart, which acts as a muscular pump, and a network of blood vessels, arteries that carry blood away from the heart, veins that return it, and capillaries where exchange with tissues occurs. The system is conventionally described as having two linked circuits: the pulmonary circulation, which carries blood between the heart and the lungs for gas exchange, and the systemic circulation, which supplies the rest of the body. Closely associated is the lymphatic system, which returns interstitial fluid to the bloodstream and contributes to immune defence. The circulatory system performs several integrated functions: delivering oxygen and nutrients, removing carbon dioxide and waste products, distributing hormones, regulating body temperature, and supporting immune and clotting responses. Its activity is controlled by neural and hormonal mechanisms that adjust heart rate, vascular tone, and blood pressure to meet changing demands. Comparative physiology reveals considerable variation in circulatory design across animal groups, reflecting differences in size, metabolism, and habitat. Understanding the structure and regulation of the circulatory system is fundamental to physiology and to the study of cardiovascular health and disease.
