Overview

Air pollution and climate change are closely linked environmental challenges driven largely by the same human activities. Air pollution occurs when harmful substances, such as particulate matter and gases from the burning of fossil fuels in transport, industry, and energy production, accumulate in the atmosphere, affecting air quality and human health. Many of these emissions, particularly carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, also trap heat in the atmosphere and contribute to climate change, the long-term shift in global temperatures and weather patterns. Because they share common sources, the two problems are often addressed together, and reducing emissions can yield benefits for both air quality and climate stability. Research relevant to weather and climate change engages with these themes, including vulnerabilities in environment and health from climate change and extreme hydrological events, pathways toward net-zero emissions through the uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide by plants, and the impact of climate change on public health. Together this work spans emissions, climate impacts, and human health. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to air pollution and climate change and to the broader study of environmental and climate-related health.
