Overview

Water resources protection and management is the practice of safeguarding and sustainably governing the freshwater available in rivers, lakes, aquifers, and other sources so that it remains adequate and safe for present and future use. It combines monitoring of Water quantity and quality, conservation, pollution prevention, and remediation with planning and policy that balance the competing demands of households, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems. Effective management addresses threats such as contamination, over-extraction, and land-use pressures, and it relies on assessing how human activity affects Water sources. Research published in Water reflects these concerns, with studies on the impact of agricultural land-use practices on Water quality, the assessment of groundwater as a resource, Water-quality analysis of public and household supplies, the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of borehole Water, and the linkages between Water, energy, and food. Together this work supports the protection of Water sources, the maintenance of safe drinking Water, and the sustainable use of shared Water resources. As a topic, it connects to broader themes of Water quality, hydrology, and environmental sustainability. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to Water resources protection and management.
