Overview
Tissue engineering approaches are strategies that combine cells, biomaterials, and biologically active molecules to repair, replace, or regenerate damaged tissues and organs. Central techniques include the use of scaffolds that provide a three-dimensional structure for cells to grow on, the application of stem cells, biomaterials engineering, and methods such as three-dimensional printing. These approaches are foundational to regenerative medicine, aiming to restore normal structure and function where tissue has been lost to injury or disease. Research published in Tissue Repair and Regeneration and related OpenAccessPub titles examines key materials and methods in this field. Studies investigate calcium orthophosphate scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications, materials chosen for their compatibility with bone formation, and the lysozyme-induced degradation of chitosan scaffolds, characterising how scaffold materials behave and break down within biological environments. This work on scaffold composition and degradation is central to designing constructs that support cell growth while degrading at an appropriate rate. Together these contributions address the biomaterials that underpin tissue engineering. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to tissue engineering approaches and the materials and scaffolds used in Tissue Repair and Regeneration.
