Overview

Plant tissue culture is a laboratory technique in which plant cells, tissues, or organs are grown in sterile, controlled conditions on nutrient media to produce new plants or plant products. Research published in Tissue Repair and Regeneration has examined this technique from multiple perspectives, including investigations into callus culture systems—undifferentiated cell masses that serve as starting material for regeneration. Published studies have explored factors affecting cell growth in plant stem cell callus cultures and methods to enhance the production of valuable secondary metabolites, specifically alkaloids, from cell culture systems of Catharanthus roseus. These investigations have examined the combined effects of nutrient salt compositions, sucrose concentrations, and plant growth regulators on optimizing culture productivity. This research area matters because plant tissue culture provides a controlled platform for producing pharmaceutically important compounds, conserving rare plant species, and studying fundamental processes of cellular differentiation and regeneration. The technique offers advantages over traditional agriculture by enabling year-round production independent of environmental conditions and potentially increasing yields of valuable plant-derived substances used in medicine and industry.
