Overview
Cartilage is an avascular, aneural connective tissue composed of chondrocytes embedded in a dense extracellular matrix of type II collagen, proteoglycans such as aggrecan, and elastin, which together confer compressive resistance, resilience, and low-friction articulation. Its principal forms are hyaline cartilage, which covers articular surfaces and provides smooth load-bearing interfaces, elastic cartilage, and fibrocartilage. The avascular nature of cartilage limits its intrinsic capacity for repair, so injury and degeneration, as in osteoarthritis, progress through matrix loss, chondrocyte dysfunction, and altered biomechanics, motivating both surgical and regenerative strategies. Key topics include the chemical, physical, and tribological properties of articular cartilage, cartilage-related protein expression in pathological tissues, the use of cartilage and perichondrium grafts in reconstructive surgery, and the management of osteoarthritis through pharmacological, biomechanical, and structural interventions. Research grounded in this area examines articular cartilage tribology, focal expression of cartilage-related proteins in myxomatous mitral valves, cartilage and perichondrium grafting in tympanoplasty, synovial and cartilage changes in arthritic joints, chondroplasty using bone matrix, and clinical and observational studies of osteoarthritis and neuromuscular deficits. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on cartilage biology, degeneration, and repair within the broader field of Tissue Repair and Regeneration, linking matrix composition and joint mechanics to reconstructive and regenerative approaches.
