Overview
Adipose tissue is a specialised loose connective tissue composed principally of lipid-storing cells called adipocytes, functioning as the body's primary energy reserve and an active endocrine organ. Beyond storing energy as triglycerides, adipose tissue insulates the body, cushions organs, helps regulate body temperature, and secretes hormones and signalling molecules (adipokines) that influence appetite, metabolism, and inflammation. Two main forms are recognised: white adipose tissue, which predominates and stores energy, and brown adipose tissue, which dissipates energy as heat. Adipose depots are distributed in subcutaneous layers and around internal organs, and their distribution and quantity are closely linked to metabolic health. Research on adipose tissue spans its physiology, its role in obesity and related metabolic disorders, and its regenerative potential. In the context of Tissue Repair and Regeneration, adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells have attracted particular attention as an accessible source of cells for tissue engineering and cell-based therapies. The journal publishes work touching on these themes, including studies of adipose physiology and obesity, the influence of diet and hormones on fat tissue, inflammation within adipose tissue, and the therapeutic application of adipose-derived stem cells in experimental injury and regeneration models. Key aspects of ongoing study include adipocyte biology, body composition, lipid metabolism, and the interplay between adipose tissue, hormones, and chronic disease.
