Overview

Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ in the lower neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism, growth, and energy use. The operation may be total, removing the entire gland, or partial, removing only a lobe or nodule, and it is used to treat conditions including Thyroid Cancer, large goiters, overactive thyroid disorders such as Graves' disease, and suspicious or symptomatic thyroid nodules. Because the gland sits near important structures, the procedure requires careful technique, and patients who undergo total removal typically require lifelong thyroid hormone replacement. In the context of Thyroid Cancer, thyroidectomy is often a central component of treatment, sometimes combined with radioactive iodine and long-term follow-up. The research indexed here reflects this clinical focus, including studies of trends in thyroidectomy for Thyroid Cancer, treatment outcomes of differentiated and well-differentiated Thyroid Cancer managed with surgery and radioactive iodine, and the molecular diagnosis and management of Thyroid Cancer. Other articles describe rarer thyroid tumours such as leiomyosarcoma, metastatic peripheral nerve sheath tumour, and extraosseous plasmacytoma, as well as the adequacy of preoperative evaluation in medullary Thyroid Cancer and image-guided ablation of thyroid tumours. Together they illustrate the surgical, diagnostic, and oncological dimensions of thyroidectomy and Thyroid Cancer care.
