Overview
Thyroid treatment refers to the medical, surgical, and radiotherapeutic interventions used to manage disorders of the thyroid gland, from functional imbalance to malignancy. Functional disease is corrected pharmacologically—levothyroxine replacement for hypothyroidism, and antithyroid drugs, radioiodine, or surgery for hyperthyroidism—titrated against thyrotropin and free hormone levels. For Thyroid Cancer, treatment is stratified by histologic subtype and stage. Differentiated (papillary and follicular) carcinomas are managed with thyroidectomy followed, in selected patients, by radioactive iodine ablation and TSH-suppressive thyroxine, with long-term outcomes studied across large institutional cohorts. Medullary carcinoma, which does not concentrate iodine, requires surgical resection with nodal dissection and, for advanced disease, RET-directed targeted therapy, with durable responses reported even for variants of uncertain significance. Image-guided thermal ablation provides a minimally invasive alternative for selected nodules and recurrences, and radiation-safety protocols govern outpatient radioiodine therapy. Rare malignancies such as thyroid leiomyosarcoma and metastatic deposits demand individualized multimodal approaches. Treatment also accounts for coexisting conditions, including altered thyroid function in chronic kidney disease. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on Thyroid Cancer surgery, radioactive iodine and ablative therapies, molecular and targeted treatment, and treatment outcomes, supporting evidence-based management across the spectrum of thyroid disease.
