Overview

Surgery is the branch of medicine that treats disease, injury, and deformity through operative and instrumental intervention, encompassing diagnostic, curative, reconstructive, and palliative procedures across virtually every organ system. Modern surgical practice integrates preoperative assessment, anesthesia and perioperative management, operative technique, and postoperative recovery, and it has been transformed by minimally invasive, laser-assisted, and image-guided approaches. Decision-making weighs indication, technique selection, and the balance of benefit against operative risk and complications. Research in this area spans many specialties: splenic and abdominal surgery, the evolution of fetal surgery, inferior turbinate and frontal sinus procedures in otolaryngology, femtosecond-laser and cataract surgery and lens-fragmentation in ophthalmology, and orthopaedic surgery with attention to venous thromboembolism risk. Studies also examine blood-conservation strategies such as acute normovolemic hemodilution in complex cardiac surgery, nutritional deficiencies following bariatric surgery, and rare operative complications including retinal artery occlusion and ocular effects of raised intraocular pressure. Methods include prospective and randomized studies, outcome analyses, case reports, and experimental animal models. By correcting structural disease that medical therapy alone cannot resolve, surgery remains central to definitive treatment. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on surgical techniques, outcomes, and complications across clinical disciplines.
