Overview
The spleen is an organ located in the upper-left part of the abdomen, beneath the diaphragm and near the stomach, that plays important roles in the blood and immune systems. It filters the blood, removing old, damaged, or abnormal red blood cells and recycling their components, and it helps defend against infection by housing white blood cells and producing immune responses against blood-borne microorganisms. The spleen also stores blood cells, including platelets, and contributes to the body's reserve of immune cells. Although the spleen is not strictly essential to survival, its removal, known as splenectomy, increases susceptibility to certain infections and is sometimes required after traumatic rupture or in the treatment of various blood and splenic disorders. The organ can be affected by trauma, infections such as parasitic cysts, enlargement related to systemic disease, and other conditions, several of which may present as surgical emergencies. Within the scope of Spleen And Liver Research, which addresses the biology and disorders of the spleen, liver, and related organs, this page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the spleen, including studies of splenic hydatid cysts, splenic rupture, and splenectomy.
