Overview
Liver pathology is the branch of pathology concerned with the structural and functional abnormalities of the liver and the mechanisms, diagnosis, and classification of hepatic disease. It encompasses a broad spectrum of disorders, including viral and toxic hepatitis, drug- and chemical-induced injury, fatty liver disease and steatohepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis, vascular and biliary disorders, infiltrative and lymphoproliferative processes, and primary and secondary tumours. Disease processes are studied at the level of altered hepatocyte and tissue architecture, inflammation, cell death, and remodelling, with attention to the biochemical pathways involved, including the role of amino acids and their derivatives in the pathogenesis and treatment of liver disease and the consequences of hepatotoxic exposure, which can be modelled experimentally and mitigated by protective agents. Diagnosis integrates clinical findings with laboratory tests of liver biochemistry and function, serological and molecular markers, imaging, and histological examination of biopsy material, and prognostic indicators such as serum markers may inform assessment of severity and outcome in systemic illness affecting the liver. Liver pathology also connects hepatic disease to broader metabolic and systemic conditions. Within Spleen And Liver Research, it provides the framework for understanding how liver tissue is injured and altered in disease, underpinning accurate diagnosis, mechanistic insight, and the development of treatment.
