Overview

A sleep disorder is any condition that disrupts the normal pattern, quality, timing, or amount of sleep, impairing daytime functioning and well-being. Recognized disorders include insomnia, obstructive and central sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, parasomnias, and circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders such as delayed sleep phase syndrome. These conditions can cause chronic fatigue, impaired concentration and memory, mood disturbance, and elevated risk of cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental health problems, and they affect people across all ages. Diagnosis often relies on clinical history, sleep diaries, actigraphy, and polysomnography, while management ranges from behavioral and lifestyle measures to devices and pharmacotherapy. Research relevant to this area within the journal's scope includes actigraphic sleep monitoring in patients with night eating syndrome, examination of delayed sleep phase syndrome across cultural and genetic contexts, studies of obstructive sleep apnea in populations such as individuals with Down syndrome and patients with type 2 diabetes, reviews of narcolepsy with or without cataplexy in children, and work on the endocannabinoid system in circadian and sleep regulation, together spanning the breadth of sleep and sleep-disorder research. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to sleep, sleep disorders, and their diagnosis and management.
