Overview

Sleep is a naturally recurring, reversible state of reduced consciousness and physical rest, regulated by circadian and homeostatic processes, during which the body and brain carry out essential restorative and regulatory functions. Human sleep cycles through distinct stages of non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) and rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, each associated with characteristic brain activity and physiological changes. Adequate sleep supports memory consolidation, immune function, metabolic regulation, emotional stability, and tissue repair, while insufficient or disrupted sleep is linked to fatigue, impaired cognition, mood disturbance, and elevated risk of chronic disease. Sleep timing and quality are shaped by circadian rhythm, behaviour, environment, diet, and genetics, and they vary across the lifespan. Research published by the journal examines the relationship between physical activity and sleep across age groups, sleep patterns in children with autism, circadian typology and chronotype in relation to school performance and meal habits, and the effects of ultra-processed food consumption on sleep disturbances. Further studies explore the endocannabinoid system in circadian and sleep regulation, obstructive sleep apnea, night eating syndrome, and a range of interventions for insomnia and poor sleep quality, including somatosensory stimulation, magnetic therapy, laser irradiation of blood, and music therapy.
