Overview
Deep sleep therapy historically referred to prolonged pharmacologically induced sleep used as a psychiatric treatment, but in contemporary usage the concept centers on interventions intended to enhance restorative, slow-wave sleep and improve sleep quality without reliance on sedation. Restorative deep sleep is essential to physical recovery, memory consolidation, and metabolic and immune regulation, and its disruption is implicated in insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and a range of medical and psychiatric conditions. Approaches studied to improve sleep quality include non-pharmacological and device-based methods such as comprehensive music therapy, peripheral somatosensory and pulsed magnetic stimulation, and physical activity, alongside objective measurement of sleep architecture and quality. Mechanistic context is provided by work on the endocannabinoid system in circadian rhythm and sleep regulation, and clinical relevance by studies of obstructive sleep apnea and its management, including nasal expiratory positive airway pressure devices, and its associations with conditions ranging from Down syndrome to cervical osteophytosis and sudden death. Behavioral contributors such as bedtime procrastination and loneliness are also examined. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical trials, interventional studies, and reviews addressing sleep quality, sleep architecture, and non-pharmacological and physiological strategies to improve restorative sleep across diverse populations.
