Overview

Bipolar disorder is a chronic mood disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of mania or hypomania alternating with depression, producing marked disturbance in energy, activity, cognition, and behavior. Classified into bipolar I, bipolar II, and related presentations, it arises from interacting genetic, neurobiological, and environmental factors and is associated with substantial functional impairment, comorbidity, and elevated suicide risk. Management combines pharmacotherapy with psychosocial intervention, and research in this domain emphasizes the role of structured psychosocial treatments in stabilizing mood and supporting recovery, alongside the psychosocial factors and comorbidities that influence functional outcome. Related work examines the broader landscape of mood disturbance, including the severity of hopelessness in depressed inpatients, the treatment of depression complicated by pain, and rumination-focused cognitive-behavioral approaches, as well as the influence of religion, social context, and migration-related stress on mental health. Pharmacologic investigation extends to novel neuroprotective and antidepressant compounds. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical studies, intervention trials, and reviews addressing the recognition, psychosocial determinants, comorbidity, and treatment of bipolar disorder and related affective conditions, with attention to recovery and the integration of pharmacologic and psychological care.
