Overview
Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions defined by excessive, persistent fear, worry, or apprehension that is disproportionate to actual threat and that impairs daily functioning. They include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and, in related diagnostic frameworks, obsessive-compulsive and post-traumatic stress disorders. Pathophysiology implicates dysregulation of fear-processing circuits centered on the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, altered neurotransmission, and neuropeptide systems such as cholecystokinin, which has been studied for its role in experimentally induced fear and anxiety. Research in this domain examines anxiety across the lifespan and in specific contexts, including postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, perinatal experience, comorbidity with conditions such as melasma, and the heightened psychological burden observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therapeutic investigation spans pharmacologic, psychological, and complementary approaches, including cognitive-analytic therapy in post-traumatic stress disorder, biofeedback and heart-rate-variability interventions, somatosensory stimulation for stress-related cortisol and anxiety, and energy-based modalities. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical trials, mechanistic studies, and reviews addressing the etiology, neurobiology, assessment, and treatment of anxiety and related stress disorders across diverse populations and clinical settings.
