Overview
Aging and sleep are two interconnected processes that play important roles in our physical and mental health. As we grow older, our sleep patterns naturally change, and our need for sleep may decrease. Poor sleep quality and inadequate sleep quantity can lead to many problems, including fatigue, decreased cognitive functioning, reduced immune system functioning, and an increased risk for serious medical conditions such as obesity and diabetes. Good sleep hygiene is essential for a healthy lifestyle, and can help to prevent many of the negative health outcomes associated with aging. Good sleep-wake habits, such as regular sleep and wake times, limiting caffeine and alcohol intake, and exercising during the day, can all help to improve sleep quality. Additionally, regular physical activity is important for both physical and mental health, and can help to improve sleep quality and duration.
