Overview

Skeletal Muscle research is the scientific study of Skeletal Muscle, the voluntary, striated tissue attached to the skeleton that produces movement, maintains posture, and contributes to metabolism and heat production. The field investigates how muscle fibres are structured and how they contract, how muscle develops, grows, repairs, and adapts to exercise and disuse, and the molecular and cellular processes that govern these changes. It examines muscle stem cells known as satellite cells and their role in regeneration, the signalling pathways and microRNAs that control muscle maintenance, and the mechanisms underlying conditions such as atrophy, muscular dystrophy, and age-related muscle loss. Modern approaches include transcriptomics and other high-throughput methods that profile gene expression to reveal how muscle responds to physiological and pathological challenges. Research relevant to this topic includes the use of transcriptomics as a tool in the analysis of Skeletal Muscle, study of the decline in self-renewal and regenerative proliferation of senescent satellite cells through a heparan sulfate–FGF signalling axis, and investigation of how long-term space flight alters the mechanical properties of human muscle. Together these works advance understanding of muscle biology and its disorders. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to Skeletal Muscle research.
