Overview
Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are infections affecting the airways and lung tissue below the larynx, including the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli, and they encompass conditions such as bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. They are caused by a range of pathogens, most commonly viruses and bacteria, and present with symptoms such as cough, sputum production, wheezing, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and fever. LRTIs are a leading cause of illness and death worldwide, particularly among young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic lung disease, and severe cases can progress to respiratory failure requiring hospital care. Prevention through vaccination, hygiene, and management of risk factors, along with prompt and appropriate treatment, is central to reducing their burden. Within the study of Respiratory Diseases, LRTIs are examined alongside related conditions affecting the airways and lungs, and research in this area addresses both clinical management and the public-health dimensions of respiratory infection. Related work on the management of cough and on tuberculosis, a major bacterial infection of the lower respiratory tract, reflects the broader respiratory-medicine context in which lower respiratory tract infections are studied. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access material relevant to lower respiratory tract infections and respiratory disease.
