Overview

Public health and epidemiology together form the population-level science of health: epidemiology studies the distribution, determinants, and frequency of diseases and health states in populations, while public health applies that knowledge to prevent illness, prolong life, and promote well-being through organised collective action. Epidemiological methods quantify how often conditions occur and identify the factors associated with them using surveillance, cross-sectional surveys, cohort and case-control designs, and analyses of risk and exposure. Public health translates these findings into screening programmes, health education, environmental and behavioural interventions, and policy. Research in this field is wide-ranging. It includes designing population-based screening programmes, such as roadmaps for colorectal cancer screening, and characterising the knowledge, attitudes, and practices that shape risk for chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease in defined communities. It examines environmental and emerging hazards, from the biological effects of radiofrequency radiation to the dynamics of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and the geopolitical and research contexts surrounding them. It also extends to the social and psychological determinants of health, including conflict and intergroup hostility, recognising that these influence population well-being. By combining rigorous measurement with preventive and curative strategies, public health and epidemiology aim to reduce the burden of disease, address health inequalities, and protect and improve the health of communities worldwide.
