Overview
Primary care and community health encompasses the delivery of essential health services at the local level and the engagement of communities in addressing their own health needs. Research published in Public Health International on this topic examines multiple dimensions of community-based health delivery across diverse global settings. Studies have investigated the role of community health workers in implementing maternal and child health programs, including barriers and facilitators they encounter in practice. The journal has published research on community health needs assessments in urban settings, factors influencing healthcare utilization such as mobile telephone communication for antenatal care, and delivery outcomes including caesarean section rates at district hospitals. Additional work addresses childhood health challenges, including diarrhea prevalence in young children and unintentional injuries among preschoolers in urban slums, as well as caregiver knowledge regarding early management. Research has also explored knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to chronic diseases like cardiovascular conditions among adults attending public health centers, and examined the integration of traditional healthcare practices with national health systems. These investigations contribute to understanding how primary care and community health interventions can be strengthened to improve population health outcomes in resource-varied contexts.
