A pandemic is an outbreak of an infectious disease that spreads across multiple countries or continents, affecting large numbers of people at the same time. Unlike localized epidemics, pandemics overwhelm health systems on a global scale and disrupt social and economic life, as the worldwide spread of COVID-19 demonstrated. Understanding pandemics involves studying how pathogens emerge and transmit, how populations respond through behavior and policy, and how health systems can detect, contain, and mitigate widespread disease. Public Health International gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research examining pandemics from several angles.
