Overview
Nutrition is the study of how food and its nutrients affect the functioning, growth, and health of the body. As a public health concern, it addresses how dietary intake at the population level shapes the risk of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and diet-related chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Adequate nutrition is essential across the life course, with children, adolescents, and pregnant women having particular requirements, and public health nutrition translates scientific knowledge into dietary guidance, education, and service delivery to improve outcomes in communities. Within Public Health International, research relevant to nutrition spans the prevalence and determinants of undernutrition among children aged 6 to 59 months in Ngoma District, Rwanda, the utilization of nutrition services by pregnant women in Moshi, Tanzania, factors influencing recovery among children with moderate acute malnutrition in Kirehe District, and nutritional challenges among people living with HIV/AIDS in Kigali. Further work examines nutrition education and active choice to improve fruit and vegetable consumption, awareness of nutrition during pregnancy, and culturally tailored nutrition interventions to reduce cardio-metabolic risk. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to nutrition and population health.
