Overview
Issues in public health refer to the wide range of challenges that affect the health of populations and the efforts of public-health systems to address them. Public health is the field concerned with protecting and improving the health of communities through prevention, health promotion, surveillance, policy, and education rather than the treatment of individual patients alone. Persistent and emerging issues span infectious diseases and outbreaks, the rising burden of chronic and non-communicable diseases, tobacco and substance use, environmental and occupational hazards, maternal and child health, mental health, and inequities in access to care and health outcomes across different groups. Addressing these issues requires data, coordinated programmes, and attention to the social and economic determinants that shape health. Research published in Public Health International reflects this breadth, including studies on the public-health risks of e-cigarette use and oropharyngeal cancer, roadmaps for tobacco control toward a tobacco-free society, the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases, mental health disparities among LGBTQ+ youth and strategies to support their wellbeing, and community health needs assessments. Together these illustrate the preventive, policy, and equity dimensions of population health. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to public health and its contemporary challenges.
