Overview
Infectious disease epidemiology is the study of how infectious diseases occur, spread, and can be controlled within populations. It examines the patterns, causes, and effects of infections, identifying who is affected, where and when disease occurs, and which factors drive transmission. Using methods such as surveillance, outbreak investigation, and statistical analysis, the field supports the detection of outbreaks, the assessment of risk factors, and the design of prevention and control strategies including vaccination, hygiene measures, and public health policy. It is fundamental to protecting communities from communicable disease. Infectious disease epidemiology falls within the scope of Public Health International, which addresses the distribution and control of disease across populations. Research in this broad field applies epidemiological methods to study disease occurrence, risk factors, and prevention, including the design of population-based screening and the investigation of conditions and exposures that affect community health. Such work reflects how systematic study of disease patterns informs public health action and the prevention of infection. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to infectious disease epidemiology and population health.
